The undergirding rationale is eschatological. The world as we know it is passing away. Christ will return. The normal structures of human life, while good, are not ultimate. In light of that cosmic reality, Paul gives his pastoral counsel.

It’s important to hear this not as denigration of marriage or the body, but as liberation from endless striving to build permanent structures in a temporary world.

“I wish that all of you were as I am.” Paul is single. He’s content with that singleness. But he immediately qualifies: “But each of you has your own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.”

This is crucial language. Paul calls singleness a gift (charisma). Not everyone has it. Some people have the gift of singleness; others don’t. There’s no virtue in faking the gift you don’t possess. If you’re burning with desire, marry. Don’t pretend you’re called to celibacy when you’re not.

We call this “the patience of Job.” We hold him up as an example of how to endure hardship without losing faith. And we have fundamentally misread the book.

The real book of Job is far more radical. It is not a story about patience. It is a story about the inadequacy of the theology we use to explain suffering, and about what actually happens when we encounter God in the midst of our pain. To read Job honestly is to have our comfortable certainties shaken and to be invited into something far more true.

The setup is familiar. Job is described as a righteous man, blameless and upright, a man who fears God and turns away from evil. He has everything: wealth, children, respect, and health. Then God allows Satan to test him. Job loses his children, his servants, his livestock, his health. His wife tells him to curse God and die. And then his three friends arrive: Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar. They come to comfort him. And the narrative tells us something we often miss: “And they sat with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his suffering was very great.” For seven days, the friends sit in silence. This is the truest moment of compassion in the entire narrative.

Then Job opens his mouth and curses the day of his birth. And his friends begin to speak, and everything collapses into a theological argument.

The friends offer Job a consistent theology. They work from the assumption that God is just and that the world operates according to a moral order. If Job is suffering, it must be because he has sinned. God does not punish the innocent. Therefore, Job must confess his sin, repent, and be restored. It is a tidy theology. According to the text itself, it is also completely wrong.

Eliphaz speaks first. He appeals to his own experience and his own wisdom.

He wants you to be happy. He desires your success, your health, and your self-actualization. The cross is presented as cosmic permission to pursue your dreams with divine backing. Jesus becomes the ultimate motivational speaker, the affirmer of your deepest desires, the one who came to make your life work better.

This Jesus is a comfort to the comfortable. He does not disturb. He does not demand. He does not announce a kingdom that overturns the kingdoms of this world. This Jesus fits neatly into the American dream, blesses your ambitions, and asks only that you have a little faith and positive thinking. He is useful. He is safe. He is, essentially, a lie.

The Jesus of the Gospels is something far more dangerous and far more beautiful than a life coach. To see him clearly, we have to be willing to let go of the domesticated versions we have inherited or constructed. We have to read the Gospels on their own terms, in their own context, and take seriously what they are actually claiming about who this man was and what he came to do.

Consider the opening words of Mark’s Gospel: “The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” Mark is not beginning a self-help narrative. He is announcing good news about a king. The word “gospel” itself, euangelion in Greek, was a term used for imperial announcements. When the Roman emperor conquered a territory or produced an heir, that was declared as gospel, as good news, because the emperor’s will was now law across the land. Mark is using that language deliberately. Jesus is announcing news about kingship, about the reign of God, about the reshaping of reality according to divine rule. This is not therapeutic language. This is revolutionary language.

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus’ primary announcement is the kingdom of God. Not heaven. Not personal spiritual development. Not your best life now. The kingdom of God. And what is notable about Jesus’ teaching on the kingdom is not that it affirms where you are but that it radically displaces you. The kingdom belongs to the poor. The last are first. The greatest is the servant. Those who seek to save their lives lose them. Those who give up everything and follow him will find true life. This is not self-help. This is radical reorientation.

N.T. Wright has shown us that Jesus’ entire ministry must be understood within the context of first-century Jewish hope for God’s kingdom to return to Israel. Jesus was not offering personal spiritual development. He was announcing that God was on the move, reclaiming the world from exile, establishing his rule on earth as it is in heaven. Wright writes that “the phrase ‘kingdom of God’ means God’s sovereign, creative, and redemptive activity in the world.” This is political, cosmic, and world-altering language. It cannot be reduced to your five-year plan.

The kingdom Jesus announces consistently privileges the last, the lost, and the least. It threatens the comfortable. The Sermon on the Mount, often interpreted as a moralistic self-help manual for being nice, is actually a radical indictment of economic systems, justice systems, and relational hierarchies. “Blessed are the poor in spirit” (Matthew 5:3). Not blessed are the successful. Not blessed are those who have figured out how to prosper. Blessed are those who are spiritually bankrupt, who have nothing to bring to the table but their need. This is not motivational speaking. This is a total inversion of human values.

href="https://unsplash.com">Unsplash

I’ve stood in enough hospital waiting rooms and funeral homes to know that “everything happens for a reason” is the platitude that kills faith faster than honest doubt ever could. We say it with the best intentions. We want to comfort. We want to offer meaning. We want to help someone suffering find a redemptive narrative for their pain. But in reaching for this phrase, we betray the Bible itself, which takes suffering far more seriously than our Christian comfort speech ever could.

The problem is not that the phrase feels callous, though it often does. The problem runs deeper. We are importing a theology of divine causation into Scripture that Scripture simply does not contain. We are suggesting that God ordains each particular suffering for a specific good reason known to him, and that the sufferer would understand this reason if only they could see far enough into God’s mind. This is not biblical. It is not even wise. And worst of all, it can become a form of violence against the suffering, a way of silencing their legitimate questions and their legitimate rage.

Consider the book of Job, that strange, dark monument to the inadequacy of our theodicies. Job suffers catastrophically. He loses everything: his children, his wealth, his health. His wife tells him to curse God and die. His friends arrive to comfort him, and for seven days they do something remarkable. They sit with him in silence. They do not speak. Then they open their mouths, and everything goes wrong.

What do Job’s friends offer him? Reason. Cause and effect. They suggest that Job must have sinned, because God is just and suffering is punishment for wrongdoing. Perhaps his sin was subtle, they say. Perhaps it was his children’s sin. Perhaps God is refining him through suffering, as fire refines gold. They are trying to make sense of his suffering. They are trying to impose a causal narrative onto his pain. And Job, though he is suffering beyond measure, recognizes this as a form of cruelty. He cries out: “How long will you torment me and crush me with words?” His friends are offering reasons when what Job needs is presence, acknowledgment, and truth.

The extraordinary thing is that, when God finally speaks at the end of Job, God does not validate the friends’ theology.

href="https://unsplash.com">Unsplash

Paul shifts gears here, and we need to feel the jolt. He moves from the scandal of lawsuits among believers to the scandal of sexual immorality. These aren’t separate concerns. Both reveal the same disease: a church that has forgotten who owns them.

Let’s start with the courtrooms.

“Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unrighteous?” The word is tolmao, a word that carries rebuke. It’s not a neutral “suppose” but an “would you really dare?” Paul’s tone is sharp because the problem is serious.

The Corinthians are suing one another. We don’t know the details. Property disputes? Business disagreements? Unpaid debts? Whatever the cause, Paul sees something far worse than the disagreement itself: believers handing their conflicts to pagan judges. The Greek term is adikos, the unrighteous, those outside the covenant community. Why would you take your disputes to people who don’t share your story, your Lord, your redemptive hope?

Here’s where Gordon Fee’s NICNT commentary is particularly helpful. Fee notes that Paul isn’t saying the courts are inherently evil or that believers should never seek justice. The point is deeper: within a renewed community, disputes should be handled within that community. The church has been constituted by God to decide these matters. The language of verses 2-3 is almost apocalyptic. Paul draws on Daniel 7, where the saints will “judge the world” and “judge angels.” If you’re eschatological people, people who understand yourselves as standing at the threshold of God’s final vindication, how can you cede your present conflicts to the powers of this age?

Anthony Thiselton (NIGTC) adds an important cultural note: in Corinth, litigation was a public affair, and taking a fellow believer to court was a very public shaming. To do so was to say, “I don’t trust God’s people to judge this. I need the pagan world.” It was a witness issue, a testimony problem, a failure of community.

Share

href="https://unsplash.com">Unsplash

It is Monday morning. You open your phone. In the first ninety seconds, before you have brushed your teeth, you have been exposed to a mass shooting in a city you have never visited, a political scandal that makes you angry, a climate report that makes you hopeless, a viral video of someone’s worst moment, three advertisements for things you do not need, and a headline designed specifically to make you feel that the world is ending.

And then you are supposed to pray.

You are supposed to open your Bible and believe that the God who says “I am making all things new” is actually doing something. You are supposed to go to work and function. You are supposed to go to church on Sunday and sing about the goodness of God in a world that does not look good. You are supposed to hold together a faith in God’s sovereignty and a newsfeed full of evidence that nobody is in charge.

This is the tension that millions of young believers carry every single day. And very few people in the church are naming it honestly.

The question “Does God exist?” is not always a philosophical question.

Sometimes it is a response to Tuesday. Sometimes it is what happens when you watch a school full of children grieve on camera and then someone posts “God is in control” in the comments, and your soul recoils because the words feel obscene against the backdrop of what just happened. Sometimes doubt is not intellectual. It is visceral. It rises from the gut, not the brain. And it asks: if God is there, why does the world look like this?

This is the question of theodicy, the oldest and most persistent objection to the existence of a good God. And I am not going to pretend I can resolve it in 2,000 words. The problem of evil has occupied the finest minds in human history, and anyone who offers a tidy answer is not taking the question seriously.

But I can tell you what I have learned, as a pastor and as someone who has sat with grieving people, watched the news, and felt the same gut-level doubt that you do. And what I have learned is this: faith does not require you to look away from the pain. Faith requires you to look at the pain and still believe there is a God who is doing something about it.

Share

href="https://unsplash.com">Unsplash

Paul’s tone shifts dramatically as we enter chapter 5.

The letter, so far, has addressed divisions and immaturity. Now it addresses something darker: sexual immorality that has penetrated the very fabric of the church. “It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not even tolerated among pagans: a man is sleeping with his father’s wife.”

The bluntness is striking.

Not only is there sexual immorality, but there is incest. A man is in a sexual relationship with his stepmother. Whether the father is alive or dead is unclear from the text, but either way, this is a violation of the deepest social and religious boundaries.

Leviticus 18:8 explicitly forbids sexual relations with one’s stepmother. This is not an ambiguous case. This is not a matter of different cultural values. This is a clear violation of the law of God.

But what is most shocking to Paul is not that this sin exists. Sinners in the church are not surprising; the church is full of sinners. What is shocking is that the church has tolerated it.

“And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you.”

The Corinthians are not mourning. They are not grieving. They are arrogant. The word for “arrogant” (physioo) literally means puffed up, inflated. This is the same word Paul has used earlier to describe the Corinthians’ spiritual pride about their gifts and their wisdom. They are so impressed with themselves, so focused on their own spirituality and maturity, that they have become blind to a grave sin in their midst. They have become so “sophisticated” in their spirituality that they have lost the simple capacity to be grieved by sin.

Craig Keener notes that, in the Greco-Roman context, sexual morality was often seen as a matter of personal preference rather than a community concern. Different philosophical schools had different views on sexuality. Some Stoics were strict; others were permissive.

It is possible that some in the Corinthian church had absorbed the idea that sexuality was a private matter, that it did not affect the church’s life together, that genuine spirituality meant rising above concern for such earthly matters. And so they had simply ignored the situation, or perhaps had even defended it as a sign of spiritual freedom.

Share

We have named the anxiety. We have walked through Psalm 23. We have practiced letting go. We have sat with the desert monks. We have recovered the radical act of rest. And now I want to take you to the place where all of it comes together.

I want to talk about worship.

Not worship as a genre of music. Not worship as the twenty-minute block before the sermon. Not worship as part of the service, where you close your eyes and feel something. I mean worship as the fundamental reordering of a human soul around the truth of who God is and who you are in relation to him.

Because here is the thing nobody tells you about anxiety: it is a worship disorder.

That might sound harsh, so let me explain what I mean. Every human being worships. You cannot not worship. You are a creature built to orient your life around something, to give your deepest attention and highest allegiance to something, to organize your fears and hopes and desires around something that you believe will sustain you. The question is never whether you worship. The question is always what you worship.

Share

beaten three times a week, and left in darkness for nine months. He was given scraps of food. He was denied sunlight. He was told to recant his beliefs about how the church should be reformed. He refused.

His name was John of the Cross. And in that cell, in that darkness, he wrote some of the most luminous poetry about God’s love that has ever been composed. He called his experience “the dark night of the soul.” And his description of that night has echoed through the centuries, touching every generation of Christians who have known what it is to love God and feel nothing in return.

John taught that the dark night is not punishment. It is not evidence of God’s absence. It is a work of God so deep that it feels like abandonment precisely because God is drawing the soul into a level of union that requires the stripping away of everything the soul has relied on that is not God. The dark night burns away spiritual consolations, emotional certainties, intellectual satisfactions, and religious performances, not because these things are bad, but because the soul has become attached to the gifts rather than the giver. And God, in his severe mercy, removes the gifts so that the soul can find the giver himself.

John wrote that in the dark night, “the soul makes the greater progress when it travels in the dark, not knowing the way. But inasmuch as God Himself is here the guide of the soul in its blindness, the soul may well exult and say, ‘In darkness and in safety.’”

Share

href="https://unsplash.com">Unsplash

Sabbath, Jubilee, and the Economics of Holy Freedom

Leviticus 25 is not sentimental. It does not traffic in vague exhortations toward generosity or abstract calls for social compassion. It is specific, structural, and disruptive. It interrupts accumulation. It limits what ownership can mean. It redefines wealth as stewardship rather than possession. It destabilizes permanent inequality not through revolution but through covenant architecture, through a set of laws built directly into Israel’s national life that reset the system before it can calcify into something irreversible.

This chapter confronts modern economic instincts more directly than almost any other text in the Old Testament. Not because it provides a policy blueprint that can be dropped into a contemporary legislative framework, but because the theological convictions beneath it have not changed. God still owns the land. Humanity still receives it as gift. Economic life must still reflect covenant mercy rather than raw accumulation. Holiness in Leviticus is not personal and private. It is structural and public.

The Land Is Not Yours

Leviticus 25 begins with a command that sounds impractical on its face.

“When you enter the land I am going to give you, the land itself must observe a sabbath to the Lord” (25:2).

Every seventh year, the fields lie fallow. Vines go unpruned. Systematic harvesting stops. The land rests, and the community trusts that God will provide through what grows on its own.

Why? The text does not leave the question unanswered. Verse 23 states the theological foundation with remarkable directness: “The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is mine and you reside in my land as foreigners and strangers.”

This is covenant economics expressed as property law. Israel never truly owns the land. They steward it on behalf of its actual owner. Their relationship to the soil is not proprietorship but tenancy under divine covenant. Every legal arrangement that follows in this chapter rests on that foundation. The land cannot be treated as absolute private property because it is not absolute private property. It belongs to God, and God’s ownership shapes what Israel can and cannot do with it.

Milgrom emphasizes that Leviticus 25 radically relativizes private ownership in a way that was distinctive in the ancient Near Eastern context.[1] Property rights existed, but they existed within a larger theological framework that set an upper limit on what those rights could claim. You could use the land, benefit from the land, transfer the land within covenant boundaries. But you could not declare ultimate ownership of it, because the ultimate owner had already been named.

This destabilizes assumptions that most of us have never thought to question. We speak of my house, my land, my investment portfolio, as if possession were the fundamental category. Leviticus insists that the more accurate category is stewardship, which is not a lesser form of ownership but a different relationship to the material world entirely. Stewardship means you hold what you have in trust, that you are accountable for what you do with it, and that the one who entrusted it to you has the right to set the terms of its use.

Sabbath Year — Trusting Provision

Every seventh year, agricultural productivity ceases. Imagine the economic anxiety this generates. No planting. No structured harvesting. The household’s primary source of income and sustenance falls silent for an entire year. The text is honest about the question this raises. “What will we eat in the seventh year if we do not plant or harvest our crops?” (25:20). It is a reasonable question. It is the question that any person responsible for feeding a family would ask.

The answer God provides is equally direct. “I will send you such a blessing in the sixth year that the land will yield enough for three years” (25:21). The Sabbath year is not a financial strategy. It is a faith practice. The economics of Leviticus 25 are organized not around risk management but around divine promise, not around the maximization of yield but around the sufficiency of covenant provision.

Wright notes that the structure of Israel’s economic life was designed to cultivate dependence on God rather than confidence in accumulation.[2] This is not a criticism of planning or responsible stewardship. It is an insistence that beneath all the planning and the stewardship, the fundamental posture of the people of God toward their material life must be trust rather than anxiety. The Sabbath year is the annual, embodied practice of that trust. You do not plant. You rest. You eat what grows on its own. And you discover, again, that provision does not come from your endless effort.

The modern equivalent is not identical. We do not live in an agrarian covenant economy. But the theological logic translates. The assumption that we must work without rest, produce without pause, and accumulate without limit in order to be secure is not a neutral economic theory. It is a rival theology, one that Leviticus 25 confronts with great patience and great force.

But he begins with a simple definition: “This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of God’s mysteries.” The Greek words are revealing. “Servants” (hyperetes) literally means those who row the boat, the rowers, those who do the basic work.

A “steward” (oikonomos) is a household manager, someone who oversees someone else’s property on behalf of the owner.

This is Paul’s self-definition. He is not a sage, not a guru, not a master whose wisdom people should follow. He is a servant of Christ and a steward of God’s mysteries. His role is to manage what belongs to God for the benefit of the household of God. The mysteries are the secrets of God’s purposes, the gospel truths that were hidden for ages but are now revealed. Paul’s job is not to originate anything, not to create his own spiritual path, not to build a following. His job is to faithfully pass along what has been entrusted to him.

This definition immediately raises a question about accountability. “Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful. But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court. I do not even judge myself. For I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me.”

Notice what Paul does here. He establishes a hierarchy of judgment. The Corinthians may judge him. Human courts may judge him. Paul may even judge himself. But all of these judgments are small things. The only judgment that matters is the judgment of the Lord. And the Corinthians, who have been consumed with evaluating their leaders, who have been picking and choosing which teacher to follow based on their opinions of these teachers’ skill and impressiveness, are being called to realize that their judgments are not the final word.

Share

href="https://unsplash.com">Unsplash

There is a reason you feel guilty when you rest.

It is not because you are lazy. You are probably the opposite. You are the person who checks email before your feet hit the floor, who fills every margin of the day with productivity, who feels a low-grade panic when the calendar is empty, who treats rest like a reward you have not yet earned. You are the person who lies on the couch on a Saturday afternoon and hears a voice in your head whispering that you should be doing something.

That voice is not the Holy Spirit. That voice is the liturgy of a culture that has taught you, from the time you could walk, that your value is measured by your output.

And that liturgy is killing you.

I do not say that lightly. The data we looked at in the first essay of this series tells us that 42% of Gen Z has been clinically diagnosed with anxiety, depression, or ADHD. One in two who struggle with anxiety deal with it daily. The generation that has more productivity tools, more life hacks, more hustle content, and more optimization strategies than any generation in human history is also the most anxious, most medicated, most burned-out generation on record.

The math does not work. If productivity were the path to peace, you would be the most peaceful people who have ever lived. You are not. And maybe that should tell us something.

What if the anxiety epidemic is not just a clinical problem? What if it is also a sabbath problem?

I realize that word might land strangely. Sabbath sounds religious, old-fashioned, like something your grandparents did or something legalists use to make you feel bad for mowing the lawn on Sunday. But sabbath, as it appears in Scripture, is none of those things. It is one of the most radical, countercultural, anxiety-confronting practices God ever gave his people. And we have almost entirely abandoned it.

The sabbath command appears in the Ten Commandments, right between honoring your parents and not committing murder. That placement should get your attention. God did not tuck rest into the fine print. He put it at the center of Israel’s moral architecture. “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work” (Exodus 20:8-10).

Share

href="https://unsplash.com">Unsplash

Your phone knows you better than most of your friends do.

It knows what you search for at midnight. It knows what holds your attention and what you scroll past. It knows your fears, your desires, your insecurities, your guilty pleasures, and your political leanings. It has studied you with a precision that would make a therapist uncomfortable, and it uses that knowledge to feed you an endless stream of content designed to keep you hooked, outraged, entertained, anxious, and coming back for more.

That is the world you live in. A world engineered to capture and monetize your attention. A world where the loudest voice wins, where everything is urgent, where silence feels like a malfunction, and where the idea of a God who speaks in whispers sounds not just unlikely but irrelevant. Why would God whisper when everyone else is screaming?

And yet. Whisper is exactly what he does.

When Elijah fled to the wilderness, terrified and suicidal after his confrontation with the prophets of Baal, God told him to stand on the mountain because the Lord was about to pass by.

“Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper” (1 Kings 19:11-12).

God was not in the spectacle. He was in the silence afterward. He was in the quiet that followed when everything loud had passed.

This matters enormously for anyone trying to hear God in 2026. Because we have built our lives around noise. Not just auditory noise, though there is plenty of that, but informational noise, emotional noise, digital noise, the relentless chatter of a world that never stops talking and never says anything that settles the soul.

Share

href="https://unsplash.com">Unsplash

Light, Bread, and the Weight of Words

Leviticus 24 opens quietly.

Oil for the lamps. Bread on the table. The instructions are calm, ordered, familiar. Then the chapter pivots without warning. A man gets into a fight in the camp. In the heat of the conflict, he opens his mouth and curses the Name. He is brought to Moses. God speaks. The man is taken outside the camp and executed.

Between those two scenes, the quiet beginning and the violent ending, lies a complete theology of communal holiness, one that is less about dramatic ritual and more about the everyday texture of life together. How does sacred presence survive sustained contact with human failure? What protects the center when the edges begin to fray? Leviticus 24 answers those questions with oil, bread, and a sobering account of what words can do to a community.

⸻

The Lampstand — Light That Must Not Go Out

The chapter begins with instructions for the lampstand in the tabernacle. Pure olive oil is to be brought regularly. The lamps are to burn continually. Aaron is charged with tending them from evening to morning, every morning, without exception.

This is not new information. The lampstand was introduced in Exodus. But its repetition here in the Holiness Code is deliberate. What Exodus established as structure, Leviticus 24 establishes as rhythm. The lampstand must keep burning. Not occasionally. Not when the community is spiritually at its best. Continually.

Milgrom notes that the perpetual lamp represents the ongoing, uninterrupted nature of the covenant relationship between God and Israel.[1] The light is not decorative. It is covenantal. Its burning is a statement: God’s presence is here, and the community is committed to sustaining the conditions that make that presence visible.

What strikes me about this instruction is its humility. The presence belongs to God. But the oil belongs to the people. They supply what the presence requires. And notice that the oil must be pure. Not whatever is left over. Not the cheaper grade. Pure olive oil, brought by the community, for the purpose of keeping the sanctuary illuminated. Presence is divine gift. Maintenance is communal responsibility. Holiness requires both.

This is as true in a congregation as it was in the tabernacle. The presence of God among a gathered people is genuine gift, but it is also sustained by ordinary, repeated acts of faithfulness. Consistent prayer. Regular engagement with Scripture. The unglamorous work of showing up and tending the lamp. No single dramatic act replaces the quiet discipline of keeping the light burning.

The Bread of the Presence — Sustained Communion

Next comes the bread. Twelve loaves, placed in two rows on the table before the Lord. Each loaf corresponds to a tribe, twelve in all, representing the whole of Israel set before God continually. The bread is replaced weekly. It is never absent. Israel is perpetually present before God, and God is perpetually present before Israel.

This is called the Bread of the Presence, and the name is the theology. The bread is not primarily food. It is a symbol of sustained proximity. Morales argues that the table imagery in the tabernacle carries Edenic resonance, evoking the original fellowship of humanity with God in the garden before exile disrupted everything.[2] To eat in the presence of God is an Edenic act. To be represented before God in bread is a declaration that the covenant has not collapsed, that the relationship persists, that the distance of sin has not had the final word.

Light and bread together form a theology of sustained relationship. God is not episodic. He is not present for the crisis and absent in the ordinary. The lampstand and the table of bread declare that presence is ongoing, that communion is continuous, that Israel lives in a relationship with God that is as steady as oil and as regular as weekly bread.

Then the chapter shifts without ceremony into something far more difficult.

A Fight in the Camp

A man, the son of an Israelite mother and an Egyptian father, gets into a fight. In the midst of the conflict, he curses the Name. The text is deliberate in its specificity: he blasphemes the Name, using it in a way that violates its sanctity, that treats the revealed identity of God as ammunition in a human quarrel. He is brought to Moses. Moses brings the case before God. God speaks with unmistakable clarity. The man is to be taken outside the camp, the community is to lay hands on his head, and he is to be stoned.

Modern readers recoil at the severity. Capital punishment for words? For anger that expressed itself in speech? The punishment seems wildly disproportionate to the offense, until you understand what “the Name” means in Levitical theology and what is at stake in its violation.

It has been misused as a litmus test for salvation and spiritual legitimacy, and dismissed by cessationist theology as a relic of the apostolic era. This essay argues a third way: tongues is a genuine, ongoing spiritual gift given by the Holy Spirit for personal edification, communal worship, and missional witness, to be practiced with theological intelligence, pastoral love, and ecclesial order. Through close engagement with the Lukan narrative in Acts, Pauline theology in 1 Corinthians 12-14, and significant voices in contemporary biblical scholarship, this essay makes a constructive case for the gift while naming the errors that have distorted its reception in the modern church.

———

I. Introduction: Between Abuse and Abandonment

Few topics in the contemporary church generate more heat and less light than the gift of tongues. The temperature in the room rises the moment the subject appears. Some communities have weaponized the gift, treating it as the only credible evidence of Spirit-baptism and turning a gracious divine provision into a theological gatekeeping mechanism. Others have retreated so far from excess that they have effectively locked a door the New Testament holds wide open. Neither overclaiming nor abandonment honors the text. Neither posture honors the Spirit who gave the gift.

This essay does not approach the subject defensively. It approaches it exegetically. The goal is not to win a pneumatological argument but to let Scripture speak with the clarity it deserves on a matter the church needs to hear again. The gift of tongues is not the centerpiece of Christian spirituality. Jesus is. The Spirit does not come to draw attention to the Spirit’s own activity; the Spirit comes to glorify the Son and empower witness to the Father’s redemptive work in the world. Everything about the Spirit’s ministry, including the gifts the Spirit distributes, is christologically tethered and missionally oriented. That theological anchor belongs at the beginning of any serious discussion of tongues.

The thesis is straightforward. The gift of tongues is a genuine, ongoing spiritual gift available to the church in every generation, given for personal edification, communal worship, and missional witness. It is not the only evidence of Spirit-filling. It is not a requirement for salvation. It has not ceased. And it is meant to be exercised with the same theological seriousness and pastoral love that Scripture requires of every other gift of the Spirit.

II. Three Errors That Must Be Named

Before making a constructive case, intellectual honesty requires naming three common errors that have distorted the church’s reception of this gift. Clarity here is a form of pastoral care.

The first error is the claim that tongues is the required evidence of salvation. This position has no biblical warrant. The New Testament consistently defines salvation as coming by grace through faith in Jesus Christ (Eph. 2:8–9; Rom. 10:9–10). No spiritual gift, including tongues, is presented as necessary for justification. A person can be indwelt by the Spirit, genuinely born again, and deeply formed in Christ without ever speaking in tongues. To suggest otherwise is to add to the gospel something the gospel itself does not require.

The second error is the claim that tongues is the required evidence of Spirit-baptism or full Spirit-filling. Classical Pentecostal theology developed this doctrine in the early twentieth century based primarily on the Acts narrative, arguing that each outpouring of the Spirit is accompanied by tongues as its necessary initial evidence. The exegetical problems with this view are significant. Paul explicitly states in 1 Corinthians 12:30 that not all believers speak in tongues, using a Greek construction that expects a negative answer: “Do all speak in tongues?” The implied answer is no. The Spirit distributes gifts as the Spirit determines (1 Cor. 12:11), not according to a fixed pneumatological template.[1]

The third error, moving to the opposite extreme, is classic cessationism: the claim that tongues and other miraculous gifts ceased with the completion of the New Testament or the passing of the apostolic generation. This position is most famously associated with B.B. Warfield but has been developed by many Reformed and evangelical scholars since. The exegetical arguments for cessationism rest primarily on inferences from 1 Corinthians 13:8–12, a text that most careful interpreters understand as describing the eschatological consummation rather than any interim ecclesial transition. Scripture gives no clear, direct warrant for closing what the Spirit has opened. The burden of proof lies with those who wish to limit what the New Testament nowhere limits.[2][3]

III. The Lukan Pattern in Acts: Tongues as Sign of Inclusion

Luke is a careful theologian as well as a historian.
